— East Mississippi Community College sophomore Brandon Henry is the first recipient of the Lucy Hull Memorial Scholarship, named after a longtime EMCC instructor who passed away last year. The scholarship honors Lucy Hull, an instructor at EMCC’s Scooba campus for 25 years, who taught classes in Economics, Government, and Leadership. The scholarship was set up by her late husband of 29 years, Dewayne Hull of DeKalb.
— The MACJC State Champions and third-ranked East Mississippi Community College Lions will take on the 13th-ranked Rangers of Kilgore College in next month’s Mississippi Bowl to be played on Sunday, Dec. 4 in Perkinston.
— From Mail Tails by Hoppy Spinks: We asked a trivia question in last week’s column about ‘Bull’ Cole’s mule. We have several calls and at least three different answers. Betsy was one answer and also Betty. The third different answer was Ruby.
— The Kemper County Wildcats continued to impress at home on Friday night by controlling Wilkinson County in a 36-16 victory in the second round of the Class 3A Playoffs.
10 YEARS AGO
(NOV. 17, 2011)
— Voters in Kemper County who reside in House District 43 have a new state representative. Michael. T. Evans of Preston, who ran on the Democratic ticket, defeated incumbent Republican Russ Nowell with just under 51 percent of the vote in last week’s general election.
— Following their win int he MACJC State championship game last Saturday, EMCC’s football players and coaches insisted they didn’t care where they had to go for a bowl game so long as they got the opportunity to play for the National Championship. That’s a good thing because the Lions are headed to Yuma, Ariz., some 1,750 miles away from school to face Arizona Western in the El Toro Bowl.
— A crowd of about 100 gathered on the lawn of the Kemper County Courthouse Friday for a 2011 Veterans Day program which paid tribute to those who have served or are serving our country in the United State Military.

(NOV. 14, 1996)
— The three Kemper County teenagers who have been in custody for nearly four months in Neshoba County could go on trial this week in the triple murder case involving three members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
— Rev. Sam J. Hull, a native Kemper Countian who has spent the past five decades as a pastor, has been awarded Kemper County’s “Citizen of the Year’ for 1996.

— Mrs. Nolan Martin, Mrs. Frank Baty, Mrs. Grace Tinsley, and Mrs. Clifton McConnell were presented 25-year Service pins by Mrs. John Persons at the 35th Anniversary of Scooba Homemaker Club celebrated Friday in the home of Mrs. Persons.
— Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parker of Scooba were recently honored by their children with an open house in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
