A bid of just over $17.5M was awarded for the construction of the new Kemper County Elementary School during last Thursday afternoon’s meeting of the Kemper County Board of Education.

Mac’s Construction of Hattiesburg, who won the bid, is expected to start construction no later than early October an is scheduled to be completed with the 54,520 square foot project by December of 2023.

The original plan also included a Pre-K/Kindergarten win which was not part of the bid accepted last week. Kemper County Superintendent of Education Hilute Hudson said that the school would build the additional wing (which would increase the square footage 67,480) as part of the project using district funds. The Grades 1-through-6 project will be built using school bond funds approved by county voters last year.

The new school will be constructed on five acres of land located at the corner of Willow Avenue and Birch Street in DeKalb. The property is adjacent to Kemper Academy’s baseball field and across the street from Mississippi Care Center.

There is a fenced in playground as part of the project and includes areas for younger and older students.

There is an also an activity room near the center of the project which will also be certified as a storm shelter.

Classes for the fourth through fifth graders will be located at the south end of the project, with the first through third graders on the north end. At the very north part of the property will be the Kindergarten wing, if it is added to the project.

The cafeteria will seat 336, while the storm shelter will have a capacity of 838 people. There are 10 classes on each main wing, with another five classrooms for the kindergarten wing. There will be room for 20 students in each of the first through sixth grade classrooms.
