DeKalb aldermen discuss water tower maintenance

Posted

In the regular monthly meeting of the DeKalb Board of Aldermen, members heard from David Watkins, of Maguire Iron, Inc. concerning water tower maintenance. Watkins informed the Board that Maguire Iron, with home offices located in Sioux Falls, SD, is able to build and maintain water towers of any size. The maintenance needs of the tower behind the nursing home were discussed, and Mayor Clark Adams agreed to meet with Watkins at a future date to inspect the tower.

Local business owner, Tooney Hill, spoke to the Board about the detrimental effect that outside vendors have on local businesses, as these vendors are able to come into the town and county and set up shop along highways and streets without paying any type of business taxes or purchase a privilege license. Hill added that it is discouraging to see these vendors come in and take business away from local merchants, they then leave behind trash and litter that must be cleaned by local crews. Board Attorney Marvin Wiggins was instructed to look into the matter to see what action can be taken.

In other action, the Board:

— Heard a discussion about possible funds that might come available for local projects.

— Discussed options for garbage collection in the town.

The DeKalb Board of Aldermen meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
