Unemployment rate goes down

Kemper County’s unemployment rate continues to drop slightly as December 2020’s rate fell to 7.6 percent, down .2 of a point from the previous month according to numbers from the Mississippi Employment Security Commission.

That is a .4 percent point less from December 2019 of 7.4 percent, before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was an improvement from last year during the shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemper County’s unemployment rate reached 13.9 percent in April 2020.

Kemper County’s labor force in December stood at 3.410 in December. Of that, 260 people were out of work.

The Nation’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2020 at 6.5 percent increased one-tenth of a percentage point over the month, but was 3.1 percentage points higher than the year ago rate of 3.4 percent.

Rankin County posted the lowest unemployment rate at 3.7 percent. Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate at 17.4 percent.
