Twenty-Five Years Ago: Kemper Baptist Association Celebrates Open House

(OCT. 22, 2020) 

— The number of COVID-19 cases increased by seven in the last week according to the Mississippi Department of Health. Kemper County has 320 cases. The number of deaths stands at 15. FIVE YEARS AGO 

(OCT. 20, 2016) 

— Site work on a new Dollar General to be located near the intersection of Hwy. 45 and Hwy. 16 in Scooba has generated a lot of much needed excitement in the community. 

— The Kemper County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance during its regular meeting on Monday that makes it unlawful for any person of any age to appear in public in Kemper County in a clown costume, clown mask, or clown makeup. The ordinance expires the day after Halloween. 

— With seven different players reaching the end zone on the day, the fourth-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College never trailed in claiming a 51-32 Home- coming victor one top- ranked and reigning National Champion North- west Mississippi Community College Saturday afternoon at Sullivan- Windham Field. 

10 YEARS AGO (OCT. 20, 2011) 

— Kemper County named Jasmine Granger as its Homecoming Queen and Trenton Steele its Homecoming King. Mr. KCHS was Tevin Roberts and Deshayla Bohannon was Miss KCHS. 

— There were plenty of people Tuesday night in an overflowing courtroom in the Kemper County Court- house who were willing to speak out against Liberty Fuels and the Mississippi Power coal-powered plant. Most of those people, however, were not from Kemper County. More than 100 people crowded the courthouse for the hearing and 26 took. Speaking turn at the micro- phone. 

— The Kemper Academy Rams defeated Russell Christian Academy 32-28 last Friday night in 8-man football and improved their 2011 record to 5-4. It was the third straight win for KA. 

— East Mississippi Community College has earned the Halbrook Award for having the highest graduation rate among all of Mississippi’s community college athletic programs during the most recently completed academic year. 25 YEARS AGO 

(OCT. 17, 1996) 

— Geiger Ambulance Service doesn’t officially become Kemper County’s ambulance service until November 15, but the ambulance company based in Jones county has already 

begun operations.
— The Kemper Baptist 

Association celebrated the Open House with a ribbon cutting on Sunday, August 25, 1996, at their new offices and clothes store on Gewin Street in DeKalb. 

— From Kipling News by Jane McWilliams: Barbara Brown and Charles and Margie Smith along with a group from Mississippi and Tennessee and a few from Texas have returned home after a 17 day tour of the U.S. Northeast and Nova Scotia. 

50 YEARS AGO (OCT. 21, 1971) 

— East Mississippi Junior College has selected Sen. John C. Stennis D-Miss. as its “Alumnus of the Year.” Officials said Stennis will be honored at the school’s homecoming game Saturday night. 

— A Scooba native, Mrs. Mary Lou Martin Currie, has been selected for inclusion in “Outstanding Young Women of America,” it was announced. 

— From Union News by Mrs. L.D. Pace: The Pine Springs Riding Club went on a trail ride Saturday from their arena to Damascus arena and then camped out for the night.
