Survivors celebrate with Relay

Posted

Seventeen years ago, a special committee established Kemper County Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Through the years cancer survivors, caregivers, and those who lost the cancer battle have been honored with activities in the spring and summer. Individuals, teams, organizations, and businesses have set monetary goals each year and Kemper Countians have shown tremendous support.

This year, due to the COVID-19 virus, activities will be different.  On Friday, June 4th, a celebration for survivors will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Keys-McRae Park in downtown DeKalb. There will be a balloon release, music, and survivor recognition (no food).

In previous years luminaries were purchased and displayed.  This year, only torches will be displayed although contributions are encouraged.  These contributions may be made to team members or sent to Jeannie Kilpatrick at 282 Wilson Ave., DeKalb, 601-479-1923.  Torches to honor individuals may be purchased from Jeanie for $100 by the date of May 20.

Survivors should receive a special invitation by mail.  If there are any questions, contact Grace Gibson at 601-743-5560.

Bring a chair and come and celebrate on June 4th!
