School design okayed

This past Thursday night, at its regular monthly meeting, the Kemper County School District Board met with representatives of Pryor Morrow, who requested approval of the schematic design for the new elementary school which is to be constructed behind the John C. Stennis Career and Technical Education Center. The estimated cost of the new school is $16M. The Board voted 4-0 to give approval for the schematic design; Board President Rontal Jenkins was not present.

The Board also took up the matter of COVID leave policy concerning those employees who have been vaccinated and those who have not. It was agreed upon a 4-0 vote that all vaccinated employees who test positive for COVID will be allowed to use Administrative leave, but must show proof of vaccination. Employees who have not been vaccinated must use their personal/sick leave.

The Board awarded the following 16th-Section bids, on unanimous votes:

— Section 16-10N-15E (169 acres) awarded to Sumter Timber- $5.10 per ton (pine pulp); $25.50 per ton (pine chip-n-saw); $25.50 per ton (pine sawtimber); and $34.00 per ton (hardwood pulpwood).

— Section 16-11N-16E (230 acres) awarded to Green South, LLC- 0.50 per ton (pine pulp); $6.00 per ton pine chip-n-saw); $15.00 per ton (Hardwood pulpwood).

— Section 16-9N-18E (245 acres) awarded to Green South, LLC- $6.25 per ton (pine pulp); $18.00 per ton pine chip-n-saw); $25.00 per ton (Hardwood pulpwood).

In other action, the Board:

— Tabled school board member evaluations.

— Voted 3-0 for approval of KCUE Job-Embedded Professional Development.

(Board Member James Creer was no longer present at this time.)

— Voted 3-0 for approval of KCMS After-School Tutoring.

— Voted 3-0 for approval of Memorandum of Understanding between KCSD and Board Attorney Bennie L. Jones, Jr.

— Voted 3-0 for approval of Claims Dockets 154409-154551, and approval of monthly Financial Board Reports.
