The Kemper Academy Rams took a tough loss to the undefeated Newton County Academy Generals, 68-32.

While the Ram defense had trouble stopping the Newton offense, giving up over 500 yards of offense, the Ram offense was successful. Eli Weaver was able to rush for 104 yards and a touchdown, while passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns.

Colton Kynerd caught two of the three touchdown passes with 154 total receiving yards. The Rams struggled early as they went down 24-0 With just under three minutes being played, however with 6:39 left in the first, Eli Weaver would heave a 64 yard touchdown pass to Colton Kynerd. After giving up a few more touchdowns, the Rams would trail 40-9 after one quarter. In the mid-second quarter, Weaver would hit Thomas Mattox for a 20-yard touchdown.

Coach Steve Cheatham said the Rams dug themselves into a hole too deep to climb out of. The Rams would outscore the Generals in the second half, however the effort came just too late. Cheatham did like what he saw in the late quarters of the game, however just wished to see it early in the game.

Eli Weaver broke free for a 31 yard touchdown run early in the second half, and late in the game would hit Kynerd on a 90 yard touchdown pass.

This week, the Rams will take on Hebron Christian, who they defeated in a pre-season jamboree. Hebron has struggled this season, as they are winless as of last week.

“I never lost my confidence in this team,” Cheatham said. “After this week, I have a lot more confidence going into next week.” Cheatham said if the Rams can go out and play for four quarters like they did in the second half against Newton, that they will be able to secure the win at home.

After facing Hebron, the Rams will only have one home game remaining as they host Homecoming against Bens Ford on October 14th. The following week, the Rams will travel to Arkansas to face West Memphis for the final regular season game. Cheatham says he has a lot of confidence heading into these final three games.
