Ole Miss, Mississippi State set to go bowling once again

It’s official. Both Ole Miss and Missis- sippi State will go bowling this post sea- son. No. 8 Ole Miss will play No. 7 Baylor, the Big 12 Champ, in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. Mississippi State will tan- gle with Texas Tech of the Big XII in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 28. It will be the Bulldogs’ 12th consecutive bowl game. 

The final College Football Playoffs top 25 were announced Sunday with SEC champion Alabama finishing No. 1. Michigan was second with Georgia and Cincinnati following. Alabama will take on Cincy in the Cotton Bowl while Michi- gan and Georgia will meet in the Orange Bowl on December 31. The winners will meet in Indianapolis on January 10 for the National Championship. The NCAA added another bowl for this year last week for a total of 44 bowl games scheduled to be played over the next month. 

No. 21 Arkansas will head to the Out- back Bowl, No. 22 Kentucky will go to the Citrus Bowl and No. 25 Texas A&M will travel to the Gator Bowl. Tennessee will play in the Music City Bowl, LSU will play in the Texas Bowl and South Car- olina will play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in North Carolina. Auburn is going to the Birmingham Bowl, Florida is going to Tampa for the Gasparilla Bowl and Mis- souri will play in the Armed Forces Bowl in Forth Worth. 

Jackson State won its first conference football championship since 2007 over Prairie View (7-5), 27-10, before over 50,000 fans in Jackson. The Tigers scored on a kickoff return and an inter- ception return, and then the offense scored on the ground and in the air. The Tigers (11-1) will now head to the Cele- bration Bowl in Atlanta to play South Carolina State on December 18. 

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral was named the winner of the 2021 C-Spire Conerly Award given to the best college football player in Mississippi. Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin received a raise and a four-year deal. He will also be given raises in each of the next four years. 

The MHSAA crowned six new state football champions this past weekend in Hattiesburg. The 2021 winners were Madison Central (6A), Picayune (5A), Co- lumbia (4A), Jefferson Davis (3A), Scott Central (2A) and Bay Springs (1A). This week, Mississippi’s and Alabama’s best 33 senior high school football players will meet up in Hattiesburg this Saturday at noon in the MS/Al contest. 

Hinds traveled to Kansas to take on Hutchinson Community College in the Salt City Bowl this past Saturday. The Ea- gles fell, 66-34, to the top JUCO team in Kansas. Northwest took part in one of the two NJCAA semifinal games in the Wool Bowl, but the Rangers fell to New Mexico Military, 49-30.
