New fire rating district proposed
A proposal has been put forth to establish a new fire rating district around the Sinai Volunteer Fire Department. According to Fire Coordinator, Ben Dudley, a fire rating district is a legally defined boundary, and there is a legal process that must be followed to establish the district.
The first step is to have residents within the proposed district sign a petition which will be presented to the Board of Supervisors, who will then set a date for a public hearing on the matter. Dudley said he hope to present the petition to the Supervisors at their meeting on Tuesday, February 22. Dudley was prepared to present the document at this past Monday’s meeting, but the board said they wanted to address the matter when regular board attorney Rick Barry was present. The public hearing will most likely be set for 30 days from the acceptance of the document by the Board of Supervisors. He added that he did not see where there would be much opposition to the proposal.
The Mississippi Rating Bureau has a point system used to assign a rating for each district. The major benefit of the new district would be to help lower home owners insurance for the residents. Dudley added that establishing the new district is a process which is underway. It is now a matter of following procedures.
