ONE YEAR AGO

(NOV. 26, 2020)

— Kemper County had an in­crease of 46 reported cases of COVID-19 during the past week which ended Nov. 22.

— A $2.5 million grant for the U.S. Department fo Energy will benefit Mississippi State re­searchers in the university’s For­est and Wildlife Research Center studying the economic and eco­logical benefits of growing trees for biofuel production.

— DeKalb Mayor Clark Adams and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority handed out Thanksgiving lunch plates this past Saturday to some of the senior citizens around DeKalb.

FIVE YEARS AGO

(NOV. 24, 2016)

— The following awards were given out at the Kemper County Chamber of Commerce/Economic Development Authority Annual Dinner: Business of the Year, Dr. Billy Calvert, Kemper County Ani­mal Clic: Industry of the Year, Jack Harrison and Jimmy Wayne Mc­Gowan, TImbercraft; Citizen of the Year, Bernard and Loretta Hulin; John C. Stennis Award of Merit, Kemper County Women’s Civid League.

— During the recentest annual Mississippi Power Community Connection meeting, highlights of this year’s service projects were shared and the Volunteer of the Year was announced from each of the seven chapters before an au­dience of around 100 attendees. Trenton Steele was named the top volunteer for the Kemper County energy facility Chapter/Plant Ratcliffe Chapter.

— East Mississippi Community College debuted its newly reno­vated Wellness Center last Wednesday during a grand open­ing celebration.

10 YEARS AGO

(NOV. 24, 2011)

— Ruby D. Rankin of DeKalb was named the 2012 Mississippi Association of County Agricul­tural Agents Distinguished Serv­ice Award winner during Mississippi State University Ex­tension Service’s annual confer­ence.

— The lawn of the Kemper County Courthouse and down­town DeKalb were buzzing with a host of activity during the recent DeKalb Fall Fest. The event, hosted by the Kemper County Chamber of Commerce featured arts and crafts booths, bungee jumps, and jumping inflatables.

— From Scooba News by Thelma McConnell: I have en­joyed having out of town visitors in my home recently. Lee and Terri Thompson of Marks are for an af­ternoon. Lee’s mother Marjorie Temple grew up in Electric Mills and he has many found memories of times spent there.

— Weighing about 100 pounds in full camouflage, Melinda Jones can load a four-wheeler on a trailer, fire a rifle and shoot a bow as well as most male hunters at Po Boy Hunting Club north of DeKalb, where she and her hus­band are members. She started hunting about four years ago and now hold’s the record at Po Boy for killing the buck with the widest rack: 22 inches. The nine-point buck scored 142 points.

25 YEARS AGO

(NOV. 18, 1996)

— The Kemper County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of investi­gation several burglaries in the county, including a pair of recent break-ins that were the apparent work of vandals. According to of­ficials, the Spanish Oak Church near Joyner’s was burglarized — or vandalized — last week, while a home on Highway 39 South was broken into Monday night.

— James Paul Harris, the son of the Rev. And Mrs. Harold B. Har­ris, Jr. of Scooba, will be ordained to the gospel ministry on Satur­day, November 23rd at Scooba Baptist Church.

Wildcats and head coach Charles Jackson knew they were to have to find players to take up the lack until last year’s leading scorer, Maurice Kirk, returned from sur­gery. The ‘Cats did use that this past weekend in the Noxubee County Round Robin Tourna­ment, winning all three games and capturing the first-lace trophy for the second straight year.

50 YEARS AGO

(NOV. 25, 1971)

— The Boy Scouts of Troop 48 attending camporee this past weekend at Decatur were Edwin Palmer, Robert Palmer, Pete Speed, Felton Keyes, Benny Mattox, Jeff Mat­tox, Butch Sanders, Kirk Sanders, Larry Jones, Eddie Stokes, Keith Parker and Scoutmaster Lee Palmer.

— Participating in the Kemper Junior Miss Pag­eant on Dec. 11 are San­dra Peden, Ruth Gully, Jo Wright, Pam McFar­land, Pam Quinnelly, Cheryl Speed, Brenda Andrews, Virginia Lynne Shirley, and Jo Townsend.
