Kemper unemployment rate drops 1.2 percent

Mississippi’s unemployment numbers have begun to return to pre-COVID-19 rates, according to numbers from the Mississippi Employment Security Commission.

Kemper County’s unemployment rate in September stood at 8.5 percent, which is down 1.2 percent as compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate stood at 8.2 percent in September 2019.

Kemper County’s unemployment rate reached 11.3 in June.

Kemper County’s labor force stood in September stood at 3,470. Of that, 3,170 people were employed and 300 were out of work.

Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September 2020 at 6.8 percent decreased 1.1 percentage points from the previous month. The rate increased 1.5 percentage points when compared to a year ago.

The number of unemployed decreased 9,700 over the month, while the employed total increased 67,200 from the prior month.

The Nation’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September 2020 at 7.7 percent decreased eight-tenths of a percentage point over the month, but was 4.4 percentage points higher than the year ago rate of 3.3 percent. Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment increased 9,400 over the month but was 28,600 lower than one year ago.

Industry sectors registering the largest monthly employment gains were Government; Leisure & Hospitality; Educational & Health Services; and Manufacturing. For the month of September 2020, 33 counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state’s rate of 6.8 percent. Rankin County posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month of September at 3.9 percent followed by Lafayette County at 4.6 percent. Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate for September at 17.8 percent followed by Holmes County at 14.4 percent.
