From school reports

After nearly six months, students are back on the campuses of Kemper County schools.

“There was a lot of excitement on the first day of in-person school,” said Dr. Jeri Cawthorn, Principal of Kemper County Lower Elementary. “It was great to hear those little footsteps and little voices in the building again. I couldn’t tell who was more excited, the teachers or the students.”

Kemper County Lower Elementary, along with Kemper County Upper Elementary, middle school and high school, began in-person classes Tuesday.

“The new school year comes with many new procedures for safety of students and staff,” Cawthorn said. “For the most part, students were excellent with wearing their masks, maintaining social distancing, and washing their hands regularly. Of course, this is all new, so we have been giving a few reminders.”

The district has done a lot in terms of buildings, transportation, and staff preparation for the return of school.

“Extra school personnel are riding the bus routes to assist with temperature checks, spacing, and communicating safety expectations,” said Hilute Hudson, superintendent of Kemper County School District. “Our building and grounds as well as our transportation personnel have an enhanced checklist for routine and deep cleaning.”

The atmosphere around the entire school district and community is very positive even with the additional changes.

“We are literally winning in a lot of ways in Kemper,” said Cawthorn. “The conversations that I have with parents and community members is about the new Kemper, which fosters a positive learning culture and climate for every student, every day – The Wildcat Way. We truly believe that if we continue to keep that winning, upbeat, and energetic environment, this will definitely be an incredible year for all of us.”
