KCLE Students learn about Fall Season

Posted

In Kelly Heath’s class at Kemper County Lower Elementary School students have enjoyed learning about the season Autumn, more commonly known as Fall to southerners.

With the change of seasons, baking and the holidays start coming to mind. This class loves to cook delicious treats. At least a couple of times a month, the students get to cook something that goes along with their unit or theme.

Heath, Sherry Arrington, and Alexis Merrick incorporate cooking into their studies while learning life skills. They discuss making lists for grocery shopping and discuss costs which leads to learning to count money. Students understand the importance of reading by having to follow a recipe. More math skills are needed by learning units of measurements for just the right amount of ingredients.

Three weeks ago this class prepared pumpkin bread, then the next week they made apple cinnamon bread. The students help prepare the treat then are rewarded by tasting their finished product.

This is an awesome way to incorporate many lessons into one while making real life connections. Learning is fun at KCLE and Fall is in the air!
