ONE YEAR AGO

(Oct. 8, 2020)

— Jordan Little was named Homecoming King and Nicaya Baylor Homecoming Queen for Kemper County High School.

— Katylnn Holley was crowned 2020 Homecoming Queen for Kemper Academy.

— Dicenzo Miller Jr. scored three touchdowns and the game-winning two-point conversion to lead Kemper County to a 28-27 football win over Morton.

— After successfully welcoming students back to school buildings in August, Kemper County School District on Monday reported zero incidents of COVID-19 for its first nine weeks of in-person classes.

 

FIVE YEARS AGO

(Oct. 6, 2016)

— Work on a portion of the 215 acres purchased by the Kemper County Board of Supervisors for future economic development could begin as early as the spring of 2017. After reviewing two proposals for development of the property presented by Waggoner Engineering of Jackson the board voted unanimously to move forward on developing the 48 acres in the fork of Hwy 16 and Hwy 397.

— Two East Mississippi Community College alumni will be honored Oc.t 15 during the college’s 2016 Homecoming. Randy Galloway has been selected as the college’s Alumnus of the Year and Ike Hopper will receive the Distinguished Service Award.

— Jordan White was named Homecoming Queen for Kemper Academy.

— Y’landa Tisdale was named Homecoming Queen and Malik Jones Homecoming King at Kemper County High School. Bryson Jenkins was named Mr. Kemper county High School, Ne’Keida Rencer was Miss Kemper County High School.

— After interviewing three candidates for the position of comptroller the Kemper County board of supervisors voted to hire Polly Medcalf for the position.

 

10 YEARS AGO

(Oct. 6, 2011)

— Kemper County will receive a $17,500 grant from USA Rural development to help repair the roof of the county-owned health department building.

— Following his second 400-yard passing performance of the season, freshman quarterback Bo Wallace of the fourth-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College has been recognized as an MACJC Star of the Week for the second time in five weeks.

 

25 YEARS AGO

(Oct. 3, 1996)

— A Nissan car which was apparently stolen in Lauderdale County was recovered recently by a group of hunters in a wooded area of Kemper County. According to Kemper County Sheriff Mike McKee, hunters apparently walked up on the car, thought it might have been stolen, and reported it to authorities. The car had all of the glass knocked out including the headlights and tail lights and the back two wheels and tires were also missing.

— Former Kemper County High School star Kevin Granger has been signed to a contract with the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball association, the NBA announced Monday.

— From Porterville News by Sunny Slaton: Mrs. Ruth Gordon celebrated her 93rd birthday on the 26th and was presented a beautiful cake at Mt. Hebron church on Sunday along with Mr. Champ Gibson who turned 75 on the same day.

 

50 YEARS AGO

(Oct. 7, 1971)

— At seven-fifteen on Friday night, October 8th, Kemper Academy will celebrate its first homecoming. Miss Ruth Gully will be crowned queen by Ricky Halley, president of the Academy student council.

— Last Thursday night members of the Kemper County Cattlemen’s Association met and enjoyed barbecued hamburgers at the American Legion Hut. Paul Hailey, president of the Kemper County Cattlemen’s Association, says 1972 memberships are due and urges all county cattlemen to pay their dues.

— From DeKalb Rt. 1 news by Mrs. Mabel Searingen: Mr. and MRs. Belmont Clay are in St. Louis visiting their daughter, Mrs. Joyce C. Barnett and her husband.

— Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Farrow are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17th.
