EMCC jumps to top of NJCAA Rankings

The Lions of East Mississippi Community College have re­turned to the top of the NJCAA Division I football rankings ac­cording to a poll released on Monday.

EMCC, which is now 8-0, vaulted from No. 3 to No. 1 on the heels of the Lions 31-7 win over Copiah-Lincoln and former No. 1 Jones’ 27-23 loss to Mis­sissippi Gulf Coast.

Remaining at No. 2 was Iowa Western Community College, while Independence (Kansas) Community College edged up one spot to No. 3 and Jones (7-1) slipped to No. 4. Snow Col­lege moved up two spots to No. 5.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of Iowa Central, Northwest Mississippi, New Mexico Mili­tary Institute, Monroe College and Garden City Community College.

Those ranked from No. 11 to No. 15 are Hinds Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Tyler Jun­ior College, and Trinity Valley Community College.

East Mississippi and Iowa Western each had three of the available six first-place votes, while Independence garnered one. The Lions garnered 101 total poll points, just three more than Iowa Western. Independ­ence was 14 back at 87.

EMCC is set to close out its regular season tonight (Thurs­day) when the Lions travel to Fulton to take on Itawamba Community College. EMCC has already clinched the top spot in the North Division and will host the second seed from the South in the semifinals of the MACCC Football Playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.

Northwest Mississippi will be the No. 2 seed from the North Division, while Jones, Gulf Coast, and Hinds are all tied at the top of the South Division.
