EMCC Hoops opens season with Sweep
SCOOBA — The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams successfully tipped off their respective 2021-22 seasons with a home doubleheader sweep on Monday, Nov. 1 at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum. Following the Lady Lions’ decisive 80-51 win over Holmes, the Lions capped the night by claiming a hard-earned 74-71 men’s victory over Copiah-Lincoln.
On Thursday the EMCC Lions dropped a hard-fought 70-65 home men’s decision to Northwest Mississippi, while the Lady Lions fell, 65-50, at Coahoma during Thursday’s MACCC basketball action.
Coach Billy Begley’s 1-1 EMCC men’s squad was set to resume MACCC play Monday (Nov. 8) at Holmes before competing in Vincennes University’s McDonald’s Classic, Nov. 12-13, in Indiana, where the Lions will meet the host VU Trailblazers on Friday (6 p.m. CT) before taking on preseason sixth-ranked John A. Logan College on Saturday (4 p.m. CT).
Coach Sharon Thompson’s 1-1 EMCC Lady Lions will travel to Northwest Mississippi for a Monday (Nov. 8) contest before returning home to play host to Itawamba on Thursday (Nov. 11). Tip-off time for the EMCC-ICC women’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. at Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
In scoring the game’s first four points in the season opener, the EMCC women led from start to finish and mounted a 15-point advantage (19-4) midway through the opening quarter. The Lady Lions’ 26-14 lead following the first 10 minutes of play more than doubled to 25 points (45-20) after a 10-0 run was capped by made 3-pointers from Shakira Wilson and Markiema Lancaster.
