DeKalb eyes purchasing garbage cans

The DeKalb Board of Alderman and Mayor Clark Adams are considering having the town purchase up to 500 heavy-duty cans for city residents to use for pick-up of their household garbage.

The discussion took place during the regularly scheduled October meeting of the DeKalb Board.

Public Works Director Ben Williams and Town Clerk Brenda Nelson told the board that it was estimated that the quality can they were looking for would cost in the $100 range. With 500 customers receiving garbage service inside the town it would cost an estimated $50,000 to purchase the cans.

Several alderman noted that it would not seem feasible to require the individual residents to purchase the cans, but it was noted by Mayor Adams and some alderman that it would seem logical to possibly require a $100 deposit that could be returned when they either moved or no longer used the garbage service.

The need for high quality cans arose as a result of garbage being strewn in town due to inferior cans being used.

“We have to figure out a way, some way, to get the money for that,” Adams said. “It’s needed.”

Williams noted that several residents already had the better cans so that it may be only in the range of 400 cans that would need to be purchased.

It was also suggested that if a resident couldn’t afford the deposit that $10 could be added to their monthly water bill.

No action was taken on the matter.

The board did approve payroll rates for the fiscal year as well as spending up to $5,000 to purchase additional Christmas decorations for the town. They also approved extending a mutual aid agreement with Naval Air Station Meridian in regards to fire protection until June 30, 2025.

It was also spread onto the minutes that the suggest day for trick or treating in the Town of DeKalb was Saturday, Oct. 30.

They also heard complaints from a local resident about water quality. Williams noted that the water was tested monthly and was safe.
