The Kemper Messenger

Concerns about the growing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic were very much on the minds of the Kemper County board of supervisors during their Tuesday meeting.

Supervisors voted that effective immediately, only one door to the courthouse will be open. You will have to wear a mask to enter, and your temperature will be taken.

Supervisors also voted that their December meetings will be held virtually by phone.

“We want to bring it to everyone’s attention,” board president Pat Granger said. “We aren’t doing as bad as some places but we don’t want to slip up. We want to make sure that people are being safe.”

Statewide, there were 7,393 new reports of cases of the dread disease in the past week. The number of cases in Mississippi since March has grown to 134,599 as of Monday, according the Mississippi Department of Health numbers. The number of deaths stands at 3,545, up by 202 in the past week.

In Kemper County, the numbers are quite that staggering. There are 362 reported cases, an increase of 15 additional cases. And fortunately, there hasn’t been a reported death caused by the COVID-19 virus in several month. The number stands at 15 according to state numbers.

The board of supervisors recently passed a county-wide order requiring for everyone to wear mask when they are in public. The current extension will run through December 7.

In other matters, supervisors voted to:

• Approve the claims docket and the county payroll;

• Approve quotes for distance learning and for court appearances from Sheriff James Moore. Supervisors also accepted the insurance payoff for a wrecked patrol car;

• Approve the reimbursements for erroneous sales of 827.35 to Willie T, Adams; $1,492,60 to Abigail Colvin; and $354 to Andrew Dabbs.

• Approve the solid wastes adjustments of balances for a period ending October 28;

• Approve the application for a $13,478 from MDEQ for a Solid Waste Enforcement officer position; and,

• Approve the deep cleaning of county buildings, the courthouse, the courthouse annex, the library, the Ruby Rankin Farmers Market Building, the Administration building, the Road and Bridge building and the Senior Citizens building.

Supervisors went into executive session to discuss person matter, potential litigation and an economic development matter. No action was taken.
