The Kemper County Wildcats picked up their first Region 5-3A victory last week as they took a 60-51 win over Morton.

The victory evened an earlier 61-58 loss to the Panthers on the road. In the only other game played last week, the Wildcats dropped a 71-50 loss to Choctaw Central.

Kemper County has two games this week. They were to host Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and visit Choctaw Central on Friday.

“We were finally able to close out a game,” Coach Daryl Osby said. “We are continuing to build our team and prepare for the playoffs.”

The Wildcats took the early lead and held on for the win before their home crowd.

Kemper County went up 24-7 at the end of the first quarter. Morton battled back, outscoring the Wildcats 13-7 in the second quarter. At the half, Kemper County led 31-20.

The Panthers chased the Wildcats through the second half. Kemper County had a 15-14 scoring edge in the third quarter and led 46-34 lead heading into the final quarter. Morton would outscore the Wildcats 17-12 in the fourth quarter but came up short.

Delance Gillispie led the Wildcats with 15 points. Timothy McElroy added 12 points while Qavion McClendon put in 11 and James Granger scored 10.

Choctaw Central went up in the second quarter and held off the Wildcats in the second half.

The Wildcats led 15-12 after the first quarter. Choctaw Central outscored Kemper County 21-10 in the second quarter and led 33-25 at the half.

Kemper County stayed in the game during the third quarter as the Warriors had a 16-14 scoring edge. Kemper County trailed 47-41 heading into the fourth quarter. Then Choctaw Central outscored them 22-11 in the final eight minutes to put the win away.

McElroy led with 13 points while Trakaleb Welch added eight points.
