A new face will be seen on the sidelines leading the Kemper County High School football team this fall in the form of John McKenzie, who was named the new head football coach of the school Monday.

McKenzie received his bachelor degree from Jackson State University and master’s degree in Secondary Education from Alcorn State University. He comes to KCHS with an extensive coaching career for the past 32 years.

McKenzie’s coaching resume includes quarterback/offensive coordinator at Virgil I. Grissom High School, wide receiver coach at Alabama A & M State University, offensive coordinator at North Carolina A & T State University, offensive coordinator at Alcorn State University, head football coach at Delaware State University, quarterback coach at Fayetteville State University, quarterback coach/offensive coordinator/receivers coach at Alabama State University, offensive coordinator/quarterback coach at Jackson State University, and offensive coordinator at Miami Central High School.

“Coach McKenzie brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to our football program” said Kathi Wilson, principal of Kemper County High School. “His passion for the game of football and student achievement is contagious. Our student-athletes are fortunate to have him as their head coach.”

The Wildcats were the MHSAA 3A State Champions in 2016 football season and advanced to the playoffs last year.

“I am interested in shaping our athletes to become strong young men both on and off the field,” McKenzie said. Our process is a three-tier approach: Talent, discipline and conditioning. This is our formula for success, which will also bring respect, pride and championships to our program.”
