Local high school teams kick off 2017 season
All three local high school football teams began their 2017 football season last week. Inside today's edition of the Kemper County Messenger you will find the 2017 Football Preview, featuring Kemper County High School, Kemper Academy, Nanih Waiya, and East Mississippi Community College.

Defending MHSAA Class 3A State Champion Kemper County High School suffered a disappointing 35-34 loss, surrendering a 28-point halftime lead against homesteading Northeast Lauderdale, while Kemper Academy lost 50-8 at defending MAIA 8-Man Champion Tallulah (La.), and Nanih Waiya came out victorious, defeating Hatley 49-6 last Thursday night.

This week sees Kemper County paying a visit to Quitman and Nanih Waiya hosting Union, while Kemper Academy gets a week off.

East Mississippi Community College, ranked once again as one of the top football teams in the NJCAA, is set to open its season at home on Aug. 31 against Jones County Junior College. With the Lions first win, it will give EMCC head coach Buddy Stephens the record for most wins for any head coach in school history. He is currently 87-12 overall in his first nine years at EMCC.
