East Mississippi Community College is mourning the loss of a member of its 2017 state championship football team. Tyone Clemons was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Jones County on Saturday.

“We are devastated to learn earlier today about the death of Tyone Clemons,” EMCC President Dr. Thomas Huebner said Sunday. “Please remember his family members, teammates and classmates in your thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead. He was a special young man with a great future and he will be deeply missed.”

Clemons was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the accident. He was a 6-3, 270-pound sophomore from Laurel who was on course to graduate in December.

This season, Clemons was credited with 21 tackles and three assists in helping East Mississippi win the MACJC championship. He had one tackle and one assist in the Lions' overtime win over Northwest Mississippi Community College in the state's championship game. Top-ranked EMCC will play second-ranked Arizona Western in the Mississippi Bowl December 3 for the national championship.

“We lost a bright light today in these dark times,” EMCC defensive line coach Davern Williams tweeted Saturday. “You will forever be in my heart son! We are all praying for your soul and your family. Rest well!”

Clemons was a resident of Laurel who played football for four years at West Jones High School.

“He was a great young man who always came to practice with a smile on his face,” said West Jones coach Scott Pierson.”He was always the first one to practice and the last one to leave. He just went the extra mile to be a better person.”
