Donald Grover Goodwin, 81, of DeKalb, MS passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 at The Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  He was born on February 18, 1937 at Circle M Ranch in Paulette, Mississippi to James and Christine Goodwin.  Don graduated from Macon High School and played football for Coach “Bull” Sullivan at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, MS.  He married the love of his life, Anita Aust, on September 1, 1957.  The couple moved to Hattiesburg, MS where Don completed his Master’s Degree in Physical Education at The University of Southern Mississippi.  Don was a coach, teacher, and director of the ASCS, an entity of the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement.

Don is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anita Goodwin and his son, Doug Goodwin; brothers, Bill Goodwin and Gene Goodwin; and his parents.  Survivors include his daughters, Debbie Goodwin Richardson of Starkville, MS. and Beverly Goodwin of Tuscaloosa, AL.; brothers, Jimmy Goodwin of West Palm Beach, FL. and Tommy Goodwin of DeKalb, MS.  His is also survived by his four grandsons, Adam Richardson, Will Goodwin, Taylor Silva, and Jake Goodwin and one great grandson, Mason Richardson

Don Goodwin was more than a good man, good friend, good coach, good dad, good grandfather, and good husband with a big good heart.  Beyond good, to those who knew him, he was great.  He stood for honesty, fairness, and truth.  He possessed wisdom, humility, and a spirit of tender playfulness.  He was passionate for his family’s wellbeing and happiness, and could turn challenges to lessons, tears to smiles, and showed the path through dim dark days to clarity.  Looking into his sparkling bright blue eyes, the world was alright.

Don, you are missed.

The memorial service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Memorial Garden Park in Starkville, Mississippi to celebrate the life of Donald Grover Goodwin.
