  • Services for Ms. Janie Jackson, 89, were held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Liberty United Methodist Church in Collinsville, MS.,  with Rev. Steven Owen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. New Haven Memorial Funeral Home were in charge of the final arrangements.

    Janie Mae Haynes Jackson was born Tuesday, September 27, 1927 to Samuel Haynes and Edna McKenny Haynes in Centreville, Wilkinson County, MS.
  • Mr. Van Richard Taylor, 66, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point, Mississippi.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gerald Butler and Rev. Ernest Flake officiating.  Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell Massey Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until service time.  A private family memorial service will be held at a later time.

    Mr. Odell Coleman, Jr. was born October 14, 1948 to Mr. Odell Coleman and Ida Jones Rush in DeKalb, Kemper County.

McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs.. Goss, 87, of DeKalb Entered Into Eternal Rest Wednesday January 24, at Mississippi Care Center of DeKalb. Visitation were held Friday January 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home in DeKalb.

McDonald Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Mr. Harvey, 68, of DeKalb Entered Peacefully Into Eternal Rest Tuesday January 31, at Regency Hospital of Meridian. Visitation were held Friday February 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home in DeKalb.

  • Mable Claire George Henderson
    Mable Claire Henderson passed away on January 24, 2017 in Houston, Texas at the age of 92.  She was born on August 2, 1924 in Marked Tree Arkansas to John Henry George and Bonnie Ruth Peden George.  She grew up in Kemper County Mississippi where she graduated from DeKalb High School.  

    In 1948, Mable Claire married L.D. Henderson, Jr. and together they had a son, Luther and a daughter, Teresa.
  • Services for Rev. Oscar C. "Bud" Poole were held at 2:00 p.m., on January 18,2017, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown, Alabama, with burial following at Highland Memorial Gardens. Rev. James Gibson officiated. Rev. Poole, 92, passed away on January 15, 2017, at his home.
  • Services for Bishop Samuel E. Phillips were held on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 12:00 PM at the Mercy and Peace Outreach Church in Preston, MS,  with the Bishop Curtis Doakes officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

     Bishop Samuel E. Phillips "Toe Joe" was born on August 12, 1942 to the late Cleo and Wesley Phillips in Clarksville, TX.  
  • Graveside service for Robert B. Prather will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 2 p.m. from Tucker Cemetery in Kemper County with Rev. David Upshaw and Rev. George Moore officiating. McClain-Hays Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

     Mr. Prather, of Hattiesburg, died Friday, January 20, 2017, at Bedford Care Center in Hattiesburg.
  • Wendell Watts Gibson, 83, passed away on January 18, 2017 at his residence in Starkville, MS.  He graduated from high school in 1962 from Damascus High School, and then attended East Mississippi Community College for two years, before he entered the U.S. Army.  He retired from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, where he was employed for 25 years, charter member and past president of the Starkville Shrine Club, past master of Abert Lodge, member of VFW, eight years on the Starkville Board of Alderman and 16 years on the board for the Starkville Parks and Recreation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Salvage Bible Class.
  • Services for Sarah Kirkland were held Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at 11 a.m. from McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Savell officiating. Burial followed in Tucker Cemetery in Kemper County.  McClain-Hays Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

     Mrs. Kirkland, 82, of Harperville, MS, died Saturday, January 14, 2017, at her residence.
  • Mr. Arnold Wesley White, 74, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at his home in Louisville, MS.  Memorial services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 13th, at Macedonia Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Odom officiating.  Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. White was born December 12, 1942, in Kemper County, MS. He was a self-employed mechanic, and was well known and liked throughout Kemper County.  Wesley’s mother said he was a very happy baby, and he always had a smile for everyone he came in contact with. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felicia Palmer White and Arnold White; and one sister, Sharon Turner.
  • Funeral services for Mr. Charles “Tommy” Rowe were held held Sunday at 2pm in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb. Rev. Chris Gully is officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.

    Mr. Rowe, 74, of DeKalb, passed away Wednesday at his residence.  He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.  He was a former member of the Hammock Hunting Club and a member of Snoody Creek Hunting Club. Mr. Rowe was retired from Union Pacific railroad.
  • Services for Linda Loraine Fulton were held Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 2 p.m. from Lynville United Methodist Church in Preston with Rev. Chris Gully and Rev. Randy Caldwell officiating.  Burial followed in Lynville Cemetery. McClain-Hays Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 

    Mrs. Fulton, 53, of Preston, died Sunday, January 1, 2017, at her home.  She was a native of Kemper County and longtime resident of the Lynville Community. 
  • Mr. Ralph Sciple, 79, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, January 2, 2017,   at John C. Stennis Hospital in DeKalb, Mississippi. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 4, 2017, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Lynville Methodist Church in Preston, Mississippi, with Rev. Chris Gully and Rev. Gerald Butler officiating.  Interment will follow in Chamberlin Cemetery on Kellis Store Road.
  • Funeral services for Loreen Roberts Holifield were held Friday, December 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Milwaukee with the Rev. Brandle Morrow officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee with Leon L. Williamson Funeral Home in charge.

    She was born February 24, 1936 to James Alonzie "Bud" Roberts and Lucy Mae Donald Roberts in DeKalb.

  • Mrs. Alice Hinton Grayson, 102, of DeKalb, MS, formerly of Gitano, MS in Jones County passed away on December 11, 2016.

    Mrs. Grayson was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Henry Hinton and Mary Azaline Hinton; her husband, Lois Grayson; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Powell and Ms. Mary Hempstead, and eight brothers, Walter Hinton, Bilbo Hinton, Pat Hinton, George Hinton, Charlie Hinton, Ellie Hinton, Bardie Hinton, and Albert Hinton.

  • Three were killed in a two-vehicle accident late Monday afternoon on Hwy 39 South in Kemper County.

    Jason House, 44, and his son Bradley House 15, were struck outside of their truck which was parked on the side of the road. Also killed was Quinton Harvey, 33, of DeKalb, the driver of the 2001 Lincoln Towncar that hit the Houses. Injured in the accident was Amy House, Bradley's mother, who was inside the F-150 when it was struck.
  • JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi Power Co. says it's likely to again delay its Kemper County power plant, pushing completion of the $7 billion plant past the previous deadline of Dec. 31.

    "While it remains possible to meet that projected in-service date, based on the current status of start-up and commissioning activities, Mississippi Power now expects that the Kemper IGCC will be placed in service during January 2017," wrote Southern Co., the Atlanta-based parent of Mississippi Power, in a Friday stock filing .

    Ms. Annie Delois Dale was born on August 30, 1958 to the late Calvin and Callie Dale. Annie accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Scooba, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

     Mrs. Smith, 87, of DeKalb, died Friday, September 16, 2016, at Mississippi Care Center of DeKalb.
  • A visitation will be held for Charles Larue Warren on Thursday, September 1st from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb.

    Mr. Warren, 72, of DeKalb, passed away Tuesday, August 30th at Specialty Hospital.

    Mr. Warren was a firefighter who retired from Hutchinson Fire Department in Hutchinson, Kansas after thirteen years of service.  He will be most remembered for being a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

    Callie Mae Haskins was born Feb. 8, 1925, to parents Calloway and Bessie Stephens. Sept. 23, 1943, she married Archie B. Haskins. They were the parents of four children, Ina Mae, Douglas, Clara Jean, and Archie Paul.

  • Theatre of Operations ribbon with three battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army Reserve Achievement Medal, Mississippi Magnolia Medal and Mississippi Emergency Service Medal to name a few. Perhaps his highest honor occurred on April 14, 1996, during the dedication of the DeKalb armory as the James L. McDonald National Guard armory.

Her funeral service were held at graveside at Cooksville Cemetery near Macon, Miss. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. Bro. Gerald Butler officiated the services.

Cox Jr., 74, of DeKalb, died Wednesday Feb. 24, 2016 ,at Anderson Regional Medical Center. Visitation were held Friday March 4, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home.

  • Kenneth "Ken" A. Townsend, 77, of Creole, La., died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Creole.  The Rev. Herbert May will officiate.  Burial will follow in the family cemetery, St. Anthony's Cemetery also in Creole under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Visitation will be in the funeral home on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9 p.m. until leaving for the church at 1 p.m.

  • William Ulma McDonald Jr., 88, a native of DeKalb, passed away Janurary 13, 2016 in Toledo, Ohio, his home for 60 years.

    Mr. Adam, 42, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian.

    He is survived by his spouse, Tracy; four children, JaQuandria, Jaburious, Jamyrious, and Ladarrius; mother Mary Temple; one grandchild; and three siblings. Pallbearers were family and friends.
