  • Emmett Norris Creekmore was born in DeKalb, MS on May 4, 1926 and passed away in Gallatin, TN at Gallatin Health Center on August 6, 2017.

    Emmett was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. V.M. Creekmore; his sisters Gerry Creekmore and Gloria Laudicina; his brother Marion Creekmore; and his son Robert Norris Creekmore.

    Mrs. Caldwell, 87, died Saturday, August 19, 2017.
  • Frances E. Johnson, daughter of the late Lyphus and Annie Bell Watkins of DeKalb, MS quietly departed this life and began a new journey on August 5, 2017. Born March 9, 1925 in DeKalb, MS, Frances graduated from West Point and continued her education by completing training for administrative services. As a young woman, Frances supported the war effort by providing secretarial services to the Department of the Defense in Washington D.C. She also completed specialized training in dressmaking to become an accomplished seamstress. Frances was a mother devoted first and foremost to raising her children. In later years, she worked in retail sales in Indianapolis, in where she lived for over 50 years.

    Mr. Lisenbe, 101 years old, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Lisenbe’s aim was to reach the age of 100, which he surpassed. He was retired from the Unites States Air Force and was a lifelong member of Bethel Southern Methodist Church where he also taught Sunday school. He was also a Gideon.

    McKinley Welch was born Thursday, March 8, 1945 to Sid Welch and Reather Houston Welch in DeKalb, Kemper County, MS. During his youth, he joined Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Preston, MS. He enjoyed church services and loved going to church. He attended Whisenton High School in DeKalb, MS.

    Lee Earnest Bolden was born Saturday, November 12, 1949 to Lee Artis Bolden and Alma Jean Mosley Bolden in DeKalb, Kemper County, MS. He was a graduate of Whisenton High School in DeKalb, MS.

    Mr. Mitchell, 64, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in DeKalb. He was blessed to have a loving family and a host of friends. Lance was an avid sports fan and loved his Ole Miss Rebels. Before he became ill, he never missed a game. He was a member of DeKalb Presbyterian Church.

    Mr. Willie James “Jab” Woods was born October, 6, 1926 to the late Lawyer Woods and Carrie Caswell in Scooba, MS.  Mr. Woods, 90, passed away on May 31, 2017.   • Justin Ray Johnson, 53, passed away on May 14, 2017, at his home in DeKalb.

    He is survived by his father, Eddie Howard Johnson; half-brother, Jeremiah Johnson;  half-sister, Julia Johnson; and stepfather, Philip Delivorias.

    He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Hellen Massey Delivorias; and his grandparents, Faucette N. Massey and Ella T. Watkins Massey.
  • Thelma Virginia Briggs McConnell
    Thelma Virginia Briggs McConnell, 98, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017.  Ms. Thelma was born in Briggs, Miss. near Porterville on June 26, 1918.  Her parents, John and Maggie Briggs moved the family to Scooba when she was 5 years old.  It was here that she lived most of the rest of her life.  She and her husband, Clifton McConnell, lived in Hattiesburg for two (2) years prior to World War II in 1941-42.

  • Mr. Mervis E. Peden was born Saturday, January 13, 1934 to the late Wallace Peden and Willie Bell Coleman Peden in DeKalb, MS. He was the third child of eight children. He left DeKalb, MS and moved to New Orleans, LA, where he resided until August 2005. In moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 2005, after the disaster of Hurricane Katrina. While in Texas, he was affiliated with the Agape United Christian Fellowship Church. He returned back as a Kemper County native in February 2017, and lived until his demise.
  • Mrs. Helen Thomas Cade, 92, of Wahalak, MS passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, April 8, 2017.  Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel, Macon, MS at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Walt Tessier and Bro. John Burks officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.   • Mr. Edwards was born on February 2, 1935 to the late Mr. Cecil Howard Edwards and Mrs. Mabel Sanders Edwards. He was affectionately know as "CJ". He attended Winston County Training School in Louisville, MS. After leaving school, he found employment with a local company, Schneider Automotive Services. His experience at this company began his life-long love of automobiles. He later moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1958, and worked several jobs before starting his own business. He opened a dry cleaning business.

    Mr. Curlee Holliday was born on August 29, 1948 to Clarence & Theloa Hickman Holliday. Curlee had seven sisters and three brothers. Mr. Holliday was a DeKalb native. He attended school in the Kemper County School District. Some of his hobbies consisted of playing pool, farming and gardening, mechanical work, etc. He was married to Mattie Green Holliday.

  • Mr. Van Richard Taylor, 66, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point, Mississippi.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.   • Mable Claire George Henderson
    Mable Claire Henderson passed away on January 24, 2017 in Houston, Texas at the age of 92.  She was born on August 2, 1924 in Marked Tree Arkansas to John Henry George and Bonnie Ruth Peden George.  She grew up in Kemper County Mississippi where she graduated from DeKalb High School.  

    In 1948, Mable Claire married L.D. Henderson, Jr. and together they had a son, Luther and a daughter, Teresa.
  • Services for Rev. Oscar C. "Bud" Poole were held at 2:00 p.m., on January 18,2017, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown, Alabama, with burial following at Highland Memorial Gardens. Rev. James Gibson officiated. Rev. Poole, 92, passed away on January 15, 2017, at his home.
  • Wendell Watts Gibson, 83, passed away on January 18, 2017 at his residence in Starkville, MS.  He graduated from high school in 1962 from Damascus High School, and then attended East Mississippi Community College for two years, before he entered the U.S. Army.  He retired from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, where he was employed for 25 years, charter member and past president of the Starkville Shrine Club, past master of Abert Lodge, member of VFW, eight years on the Starkville Board of Alderman and 16 years on the board for the Starkville Parks and Recreation. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Salvage Bible Class.

  • Funeral services for Mr. Charles “Tommy” Rowe were held held Sunday at 2pm in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb. Rev. Chris Gully is officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.

    Mr. Rowe, 74, of DeKalb, passed away Wednesday at his residence.  He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.  He was a former member of the Hammock Hunting Club and a member of Snoody Creek Hunting Club. Mr. Rowe was retired from Union Pacific railroad.
  • Mr. Arnold Wesley White, 74, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at his home in Louisville, MS.  Memorial services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 13th, at Macedonia Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Odom officiating.  Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. White was born December 12, 1942, in Kemper County, MS. He was a self-employed mechanic, and was well known and liked throughout Kemper County.  Wesley’s mother said he was a very happy baby, and he always had a smile for everyone he came in contact with. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felicia Palmer White and Arnold White; and one sister, Sharon Turner.

  • Mrs. Alice Hinton Grayson, 102, of DeKalb, MS, formerly of Gitano, MS in Jones County passed away on December 11, 2016.

    Mrs. Grayson was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Henry Hinton and Mary Azaline Hinton; her husband, Lois Grayson; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Powell and Ms. Mary Hempstead, and eight brothers, Walter Hinton, Bilbo Hinton, Pat Hinton, George Hinton, Charlie Hinton, Ellie Hinton, Bardie Hinton, and Albert Hinton.
  • JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi Power Co. says it's likely to again delay its Kemper County power plant, pushing completion of the $7 billion plant past the previous deadline of Dec. 31.

    "While it remains possible to meet that projected in-service date, based on the current status of start-up and commissioning activities, Mississippi Power now expects that the Kemper IGCC will be placed in service during January 2017," wrote Southern Co., the Atlanta-based parent of Mississippi Power, in a Friday stock filing .

  • Three were killed in a two-vehicle accident late Monday afternoon on Hwy 39 South in Kemper County.

    Jason House, 44, and his son Bradley House 15, were struck outside of their truck which was parked on the side of the road. Also killed was Quinton Harvey, 33, of DeKalb, the driver of the 2001 Lincoln Towncar that hit the Houses. Injured in the accident was Amy House, Bradley's mother, who was inside the F-150 when it was struck.

    Mr. Warren, 72, of DeKalb, passed away Tuesday, August 30th at Specialty Hospital.

    Mr. Warren was a firefighter who retired from Hutchinson Fire Department in Hutchinson, Kansas after thirteen years of service.  He will be most remembered for being a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
