Kemper County Relay for Life is looking to add additional teams for its annual event that is set for June 2 on the courthouse square in DeKalb.

"We are off to a slow start, but we are trying to recruit some more teams," said Totsseta Hearn, co-chairman of the event. "The more the merrier. We have about 10 teams we always have, but we are hoping to get some new people involved as well this year."

Hearn said the next meeting for Kemper County Relay for Life would be at 5:30 p.m. on March 7 at the Farmer's Market in DeKalb. "We would like for interested people to come out and visit with us then, or they can contact me or anyone else involved in Relay. We will help get them started."

This year's theme is "Fishing for a Cure" and Hearn said t-shirts are already available to be purchased for $15 each. They are on sale at The Commercial Bank and can also be purchased from Relay for Life team members.

Kemper County, despite having a small population, has always been a top per capita producer when it comes to fundraising for cancer research through Relay for Life. This year's goal is $56K, while last year $56,526.25 was collected.

The event, which is in its 13th year, will run from 6 p.m. to midnight and will include a survivor's walk around the courthouse to kick things off, as well as entertainment throughout the night.
