In a special called meeting, this past Thursday night, the Kemper County School Board began initial discussions concerning budgeting for the upcoming fiscal year. Many of the items had to be taken up in a closed executive session.

The Board did discuss several items with Transportation Director, Douglas Newton, including: the possibility of purchasing two new activity buses which could be used for field trips, etc.; the possibility of purchasing a software tracking system and telephone system which would help keep track of buses, drivers and students; the possibility of a pay increase for mechanics and helpers; and moving bus drivers to a 12-month pay scale. In other action, the Board:

— Voted 5-0 for approval for Kathleen Lynn, Nichole Mason and Samuel Bennett to participate in the Advanced Placement Summer Institute.

— Voted 5-0 for approval to employ Jarhonda Carlisle for teacher at East Kemper Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year.

— Voted 5-0 for approval to employ Jah’myia Dickinson for kindergarten teacher at West Kemper Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year.

— Voted 5-0 for approval to employ John McKenzie as head football coach and science teacher at KCHS for the 2018-2019 school year.

— Voted 5-0 for approval of summer school at East Kemper Elementary.

— Voted 5-0 for approval of 21st Century Summer Program site coordinator, tutor

assistants and substitute tutor at West Kemper Elementary.

— Voted 5-0 for approval of a revised lst for 21st Centruy bus drivers.

— Voted 5-0 for approval of CPR and epilepsy training for KCSD staff that will

assist with Child Find Efforts.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Thursday, June 14, at 5 p.m.
