The Kemper County Wildcats will be looking for their first victory of the 2019 season Friday night when they visit West Lowndes.

The Wildcats are coming off a 38-32 loss to the Lake Hornets. West Lowndes, which opened the season with a 34-6 win over Ethel, beat McAdams 12-8 last Friday.

Lake scored first but the Wildcats came back with a touchdown of their own. Aaron Steele caught a pass from De’Onte Rush and turned it into a 53-yard TD completion. The try for two failed and the game was tied at 6-6 in the first quarter.

Lake scored twice. Then the Wildcats answered when Ricardo Windham scored on a 20-yard pass play from Rush. Again the extra point try was no good and the Wildcats trailed 20-12 at the half.

It seemed like the Wildcats were just one step behind the Hornets all night.  Lake scored and then Steele scored again, this time on a 29-yard TD pass from Rush. The Wildcats went for two but did not score. Kemper trailed 26-18.

Lake scored again and Steele quickly answered by returning a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The extra point try failed and the Wildcats trailed 32-28.

The Wildcats had three touchdowns called back, including two plays in a row. Lake added one more touchdown to take the victory.

Kemper County finished with 307 total yards. Rush completed 14-of-28 passes for 202 yards. He threw for three touchdowns and was intercepted twice. Ricardo Windam has seven catches for 84 yards.

Ishmael Naylor finished with 16 tackles while Wes Granger and Windham both had 14 tackles.

“We beat ourselves,” Coach John McKenzie said. “We had 15 penalties and three touchdowns called back. You can’t make those kinds of mistakes and hope to win.

“We will go back to work and try to correct our mistakes. We are playing hard and we are going to have to play smart.”
