The Kemper County school board dealt with a variety of issues ranging from personnel matters to 16th section land leases and planting pine trees during their Thursday meeting.

During to meeting, board members voted to approve the minutes from meetings held May 30, June 10, June 13 and June 20.

Board members covered a lot of ground in their consent agenda when they voted 5-0 to: approve the deletion list, the use of Medical and Family Leave by an employee; a letter of resignation; the revised Safety Plans; the district’s 2019-2020 employee handbook; the Professional Learning Plan; the Kemper County High School Graduation Restructuring Plan for the 2019-2020 school year; the drop out restructuring plan; a district student transfer; an agreement between the school district and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitative Services; East Kemper Lower Elementary School fundraisers; John C. Stennis Career Technical Center fundraisers; an alumni basketball game; picture day at Kemper County High School; the schedules for the Kemper County football, volleyball and basketball teams;  the junior high basketball schedule; and, the agenda.

If you are going to eat breakfast or lunch at Kemper County High School, it’s going to cost you more. The new price is $2.50 for breakfast and $3.75 for lunch.

School board members took care of 16th Section land business as they approved hunting leases and discussed planting trees. They hired a number of teachers in open session and discussed the hiring of others in executive session. They approved clubs, new policies and sending coaches to training sessions. They approved an agreement with Edgenuity for the company to provide certified teachers the fifth grade ELA at West Kemper Elementary School.

Staff of the athletic department and other activities were hired for the school year, They are: Donta Yates, athletic director and varsity boys head coach; John McKenzie, head football coach; Ronnie Slaughter, girls basketball coach, assistant football and head track; Keith Cole, assistant track and volleyball coach; Julius Newton, middle school girls basketball and high school girls assistant; Sam Bennett, middle school boys basketball; Laquantis Horn, assistant football coach; Ed Square, assistant football coach and power lifting coach; and, Michael Johnson, assistant football. Mark Hatch was hired as the band director. Jonetta Slaughter was hired as cheer coach and Veronica McDonald is the dance coach. Marsha Nathan will be the choir and drama instructor.

They approved a water user agreement with the Little Rock Community Center.

School board members also approved two travel requests by the Kemper County Junior ROTC to go to Pine Bluff, Ark., on August 23 and Tuskegee University National Park on September 13.

School board members approved the claims docket.

It is almost time for school to start. New teachers report on July 31. All staff reports August 1 and school starts August 6.
